Bill Kristol: Healthcare Plan's Failure Imperils GOP and Trump

Newsmax TV's Steve Malzberg

The failure of the plan to repeal and replace Obamacare jeopardizes both President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans because "the whole idea of beginning with healthcare was a mistake," conservative journalist Bill Kristol told Newsmax TV on Tuesday.

"People greatly overestimated how powerful you are when you have only 52 senators," Kristol, The Weekly Standard editor at large, told host Steve Malzberg on Tuesday. "That's a tight margin to work with."

He noted Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell "had conflicting views amongst some of the senators, but again they probably should have gotten expectations down."

In addition, McConnell's proposal Monday for an outright Obamacare repeal "was never going to pass – and now it makes him look a little weaker," Kristol said.

Because such widespread dissention remains within the party on healthcare, "it's a moment of some peril for the Republican Congress – and to some degree for the Trump presidency."
