Sen. Johnson to Newsmax: Don't Expect Hunter Charges on Contempt

By    |   Monday, 08 January 2024 08:41 PM EST

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., told Newsmax on Monday if the House votes this week to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress, he doesn't expect Attorney General Merrick Garland to follow through with prosecuting President Joe Biden's son.

The House could vote as early as Wednesday on whether to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress after he defied a subpoena to appear Dec. 13 for a closed-door transcribed interview relating to the impeachment investigation of his father. If approved, the House would then refer the recommendation to the Department of Justice, which prosecuted former members of the Trump administration for defying subpoenas related to the Democrat-led House investigation into the events of Jan. 6, 2021.

"I have my doubts as to whether or not Merrick Garland will equally apply justice," Johnson told "Rob Schmitt Tonight." "Remember, he prosecuted members of the Trump administration that were voted in contempt of Congress for failing to comply with subpoenas.

"But let's face it, the Bidens, they're special. I have no idea what Merrick Garland would do. It would be a travesty if he doesn't enforce justice equally and also indict Hunter for contempt of Congress. But it's hard to predict. About the only thing you can say for sure is that Merrick Garland will probably not be fair this way, and we probably will have a dual system of justice in this case."
