Sekulow to Newsmax: House 'Must Vote' to Further Biden Impeachment

By    |   Thursday, 14 September 2023 10:46 AM EDT

Jordan Sekulow, a onetime lawyer for former President Donald Trump, told Newsmax Thursday that it will take a winning vote in the House of Representatives for Republicans to get the investigative tools they need to impeach President Joe Biden.

"You've got to have the votes, and this is what's key," Sekulow said during "Wake Up America." "[House Speaker] Kevin McCarthy has opened up the inquiry stage, and we actually took this position when we represented President Trump in the first impeachment, and so did the Department of Justice and White House counsel. We said, Until you take a vote to open up an impeachment, your subpoena power does not exist."

McCarthy on Tuesday ordered the opening of "an inquiry" on impeaching Biden.

"These are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption, and they warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives," McCarthy, R-Calif., said, announcing he was directing the House led by the Oversight Committee "to open a formal impeachment inquiry."

Sekulow said that the current policies in place cannot compel those witnesses or documents be produced to the House Oversight Committee's investigation into the president, his son Hunter, and other members of the Biden family regarding business deals with foreign entities in China and Ukraine.

"[The policy] hasn't been challenged in court, and so, the Biden administration, if they so choose, could rely on that to block parts of this inquiry in the sense they don't have subpoena power," he said. "That doesn't mean other people won't comply voluntarily to get the information, but I think the key here is to take it from circumstantial to hard evidence.

"You're going to have to take that [House] vote and get [a majority of] 218 [votes] to even have the power to figure out what articles of impeachment you might want to bring."

Biden and the White House have denied any wrongdoing following the recent batch of revelations from the House committee showing millions of dollars flowing into the Biden family business entities and family members' bank accounts from foreign entities.

On Wednesday, White House counsel's office spokesman Ian Sams sent a letter to national media executives criticizing Republicans for the Biden investigation, saying it was all "lies," CNN reported.

"It's time for the media to ramp up its scrutiny of House Republicans for opening an impeachment inquiry based on lies," Sams wrote in the letter.
