(Newsmax TV's "The Howie Carr Show")

There have been no instances of foodborne transmission of coronavirus, so produce and other foods should be considered safe Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue told Newsmax TV on Monday.

People need a "heightened sense of hygiene in all areas," Purdue told Monday's "The Howie Carr Show." "I think again just good common sense good hygiene for our personal benefits the way we always have: Washing hands, washing our fruit, washing the food. And making sure our counters are cleaned and disinfected."

The panic of two weeks ago has subsided, Purdue said, and people are more comfortable. The secretary said he was recently in a grocery story and the shelves were fully stocked and people were shopping comfortably.

The food supply chain is strong, he added.

Spot shortages seen in recent days also appear to have been corrected, Perdue said.
In other instances, he noted, "there there might not be the same quality or the same degree of choices that they're always are, but there's plenty of food on the shelf."
