Football fans should think twice about watching the Super Bowl because the sport can cause debilitating health issues for its players, says Steve Almond, an author and former creative writing teacher at Boston College.
"I love the sport. It's amazing, incredibly compelling, and I'm sorry not to be watching it," Almond told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.
"But over the past few years, it's become more and more apparent that routine play in college, high school, and especially in the NFL causes serious brain injury," he said.

Almond said he made his decision to stay away from the ratings-grabbing TV spectacular when he started to "feel queasy" about being a fan.
"Whether you want to admit it or not, you're sitting on the couch consuming the game that you know causes the players, or runs the risk of causing the players, brain damage," he said.
"You can be OK with that and make your rationalizations. I started to feel complicit and said, personally, I'm not cool with that."
Almond wrote a controversial column in The New York Times titled “Is it Immoral to Watch the Super Bowl?”
