Sen. Susan Collins to Newsmax TV: 'I Vote My Conscience'

(Newsmax TV's "Greg Kelly Reports")

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, on Thursday responded to CBS's "Late Show" host Stephen Colbert, who criticized her for saying she "believes" President Donald Trump "will be much more cautious in the future," following his impeachment.

Colbert, on his show Wednesday night, described Collins as "the senator who has most successfully talked herself into believing that she believes in something," after she explained her comment about Trump on Fox News, saying her remark was "more aspirational on my part," and she should have said "hopes" instead of "believes."

Collins told Newsmax TV host Greg Kelly, she follows her "conscience," when it comes to votes.

The late-night host said Wednesday, "a better word for Sen. Susan Collins would be former Sen. Susan Collins."

The senator later explained to "Greg Kelly Reports" that her comment about Trump expressed her "aspirations," and what she "hope would be the outcome of this case, since so many Republicans joined by in saying that the president's call was inappropriate – it was wrong to list the help of a foreign government to investigate a political rival."

Collins added, "I would hope that he would have learned from the experience and would be more cautious about his language on phone calls like this one in the future, but clearly that's a hope and not a prediction."

When asked about whether her stance on certain issues that had her siding with Democrats over Republicans would hurt her re-election chances, Collins said, "Look, all I can do is what I think is right," adding, "if you are in the center, if you don't toe the party line on either side, you get a barrage of criticism."
