Tom DeLay to Newsmax: Tax Reform Passage 'Absolutely Huge'

(Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now")

Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay applauded the GOP's efforts to pass tax reform legislation Wednesday, calling it "absolutely huge."

DeLay appeared on Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now," and spoke with host Bill Tucker and former White House press secretary Sean Spicer about the Republican Party's accomplishment on tax reform.

"I'm very happy about it," DeLay said. "It was just something to watch, particularly coming from the House and watch what they had to go through to get to this point.

"This is huge, this is absolutely huge, and everybody talks about the details of what's in the bill, but for me it's huge for the Republican Party and the Republican majority because people just don't understand what it takes to do something like this. . . . It bodes well for the upcoming year. It really does."

DeLay pointed out the efforts of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to get the bill passed, noting Republicans lost one vote because Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is at home as he battles brain cancer and was unable to cast his vote.

"I got to tell you, probably hand more kudos to McConnell than anybody else," DeLay said. "Of course, I'm one of those advocates to try to get rid of the 60 votes in the Senate, and I think it slows down the will of the people.

"But at the same time, for him to only have 52 votes and one of them not even showing up, John McCain, because he's sick, I got to tell you, it took a lot to get to that 51 votes, and the skills that I saw that McConnell was using was pretty amazing."

The tax bill passed in both houses of Congress and now has to go through a brief legislative process before it lands on President Donald Trump's desk for signing.
