Noting Alabama Senate candidate Tommy Tuberville never endorsed President Donald Trump, former Attorney General Jeff Sessions told Newsmax TV he is still holding out hope to get the president's backing in a heated Senate race.
"Nobody knows what the president will do," Sessions told Thursday's "Greg Kelly Reports" of Trump's getting behind Tuberville against his former attorney general. "We'll wait and see about that.
"I am an advocate for the president's agenda," he continued. "I was advocating it before the president announced; that's why I endorsed him and traveled with him all over the country and did my level best to get him elected and help him advance his agenda."
Tuberville and Sessions ran in a near dead heat in the Alabama primary March 3 (33.39%-31.65%), forcing a July 14 runoff as they battle for the Senate seat Sessions gave up to be Trump's attorney general.
But Tuberville, Sessions told host Greg Kelly, cannot boast being on the Trump train like he can.
"My opponent never gave a dime to the president; he never even endorsed him," Sessions added. "He's not ready to lead; he's not ready to advance Alabama's values.
"I know these issues: immigration, trade, building the wall, standing up to China. I've been involved in all of those, and I know them, and I'm ready to lead right now."
Sessions made a prediction Trump will win re-election, despite the two having a falling out from the infamous recusal from the Russia investigation, ultimately leading to Trump firing Sessions as attorney general.
"We need to help the president when he is re-elected – I think he will [be]," Sessions added. "When he's re-elected, he'll have a great window of opportunity to accomplish some fabulous things. I know how to help him. My opponent does not."
As for Trump's frequent criticism of Session's recusal fueling the expansion of the Democrats' efforts to tarnish him with nonstop investigations in the first half of his first term, Sessions told Kelly not recusing himself would have only served to "hurt" Trump's presidency.
"I did what the law required me to do as attorney general," Sessions concluded. "I was loyal to his agenda, and I've never taken any action that would undermine his ability to be effective and to govern and to win re-election."
