The Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia told Newsmax TV that China “can’t be trusted.”
During a Friday appearance on Newsmax TV’s “American Agenda,” Rep. Ted Yoho, R-Fla., said the U.S. needs to “have a counter to what China is doing.”
“China has ignored international law,” he said.
Yoho referenced an incident involving China and the Philippines. He said when the Philippines took China “to task” at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in 2016 over its claims to the South China Sea, China ignored the ruling that sided with the Philippines.
“China ignored that ruling,” he said. “They never even sent a representative there. They wrote their own rules. They kept exploring, encroaching on the sovereignty of these other nations.”
He said that China has invaded airspace and shined lasers at pilots from different countries, including the U.S.
He also stated that China broke a promise it made in 2015 that it wouldn't “militarize land masses they dredged up.”
“Yet, today, those are militarized,” he said, adding they have air bases, barracks, offensive and defensive weapons and military radars on them.
“They have played a very aggressive hand because nobody has stood up to them,” he said.
He said President Donald Trump “has stood up” to China and he predicts change will happen.
But that change would be threatened, he said, if Joe Biden becomes president.
“I think you will see a roll back of what President Trump has done and you’ll see an extension of the failed Obama policies,” he said of how Biden would handle China if elected president.
