Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., on Monday echoed calls by House Leader Kevin McCarthy to provide the FBI’s classified briefing on Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell’s relationship with a suspected Chinese spy.
“Every member needs to receive that briefing. Every member needs to understand the extent and sophistication of the Chinese influence operations,” Waltz said during an appearance on Newsmax TV’s “Spicer & Co.”
McCarthy, R-Calif., on Friday received a closed-door FBI briefing on Swalwell’s close ties to Christine Fang, a suspected Chinese intelligence operative, and said afterwards that he thinks Swalwell should not be on the House Intelligence Committee.
Swalwell last week said he did not share sensitive information with Fang.
"I was told about this individual and I offered to help," he told CNN's Jim Sciutto. "All I did was cooperate and the FBI said that yesterday."
Waltz said Democrats need to wake up. “They’re not targeting members of Congress that are going to be on the party planning committee or the shoeshine committee,” Waltz told Newsmax.
“They are targeting members that are on the intelligence committee, members of the armed forces committee, space committee and others. … We are awash with Chinese influence money, in Wall Street, in sports … it’s in Disney, it’s everywhere because at the end of the day President Xi (Jinping), in his own words, says he wants to replace the American dream with the China dream. … America needs to wake up and the Democrats are asleep at the switch.”
