Matthew Whitaker to Newsmax TV: Mueller Probe Could Have Been Avoided

The Steele dossier, which was used as the FBI's pretext for obtaining warrants against former Trump campaign aide Carter Page, has been revealed to contain several instances of Russian misinformation and had it not been used, to begin with, the whole "nightmare" of special counsel Robert Mueller's two-year investigation could have been avoided, former acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker told Newsmax TV Monday.

"One thing led to another, and led to another," Whitaker told Newsmax TV's "Spicer & Co." "Ultimately what happened, and why Mueller was appointed was because (former FBI Deputy Director) Andy McCabe put President (Donald) Trump as a target of a criminal investigation."

Decisions were made that "created a cavalcade,"  resulting in the Mueller investigation.

"If you didn't have the Russian dossier filled with Russian disinformation, none of this nightmare that we all lived through would have happened," said Whitaker.

But the media's reaction to the Trump administration is not surprising, said Whitaker.

"The mainstream media which is the eight hundred pound gorilla here, has always had it out for President Trump and they will continue to try to go after him and now it's, you know, now it's testing kits," said Whitaker. "Tomorrow it will be something else again because they're always trying to undermine his administration."

According to a report in The New York Times, the Trump administration last week declassified several footnotes from an investigation by Justice Department independent Inspector General Michael Horowitz.

The report found that the FBI had a legal basis to open the investigation into Russia and Trump's 2016 campaign, but committed several omissions, including the application to surveil Page.
