D'Souza: Liberals 'Never Believed in Free Speech'

By    |   Monday, 09 June 2014 07:21 PM EDT

Dinesh D'Souza told Newsmax on Monday the political left is involved in the "shaming of America."

D'Souza, an author, filmmaker, and former policy analyst in the Reagan administration, told co-hosts Dennis Kneale and Diane Dimond on "The Steve Malzberg Show” he believes Democrats only follow the Constitution when it agrees with their agenda.

"I think that the truth of the matter is that the left never really believed in free speech. They believed in free speech for them," D'Souza said. "Their goal from the beginning was to take over these institutions of elementary and secondary education, of higher education. It's far worse than shouting people down because that's something that's kind of out in the open. What the left is really doing is practicing in the curriculum and in the classroom what I call the shaming of America. The systematic, one-sided picture of American history that is highly doctored to serve progressive political goals."

D'Souza appeared on the show to discuss his upcoming film, "America," which has been framed as the sequel to "2016: Obama's America." Slated for a July 2 release, D'Souza said the film "encompasses the whole progressive movement that has been conducting a long march through the institutions of education and Hollywood and media."

The 53-year-old D'Souza told Newsmax he hopes low-information voters get out and see his movie with the November midterm elections on the horizon. He thinks the elections will come down to that group, along with the "highly motivated voter."

"I'm hoping to give people a sort of Swiss Army knife, if you will, of ideas so they can be really effective in taking on the progressive team," he said.

D'Souza discussed political filmmakers and why his film "America'" is distinguished from the left leaning works of  liberals such as Michael Moore.

"It was an Obama bashing film, but it was very different than Michael Moore," he said of "2016." "What Michael Moore does in his films is he wakes you up when you're asleep or he jumps on you or he doesn't let you talk. He's a bully."

Later in the interview, D'Souza added, "There are hardcore leftists railing against America in this movie. Unlike Michael Moore, I let the other side speak and then I take on their arguments."

D'Souza, who has published several books and was also part of another political documentary, "Michael Moore Hates America," was indicted in January for making illegal campaign contributions to New York Republican Wendy Long, who ran for the Senate in 2012. D'Souza pled guilty to the charge in May,  admitting to having two people give Long's campaign $10,000 each and then reimbursing them.

"From the beginning of this case when the prosecution and I appeared in court, I said that I did exceed the limits of the campaign finance laws," D'Souza told Malzberg last month "This is a case involving no corruption whatsoever. I gave $20,000 to a longtime college friend running for the Senate, and I wasn't trying to get anything out of it … She was flailing. I was trying to help her, and I did it in the wrong way."

D'Souza's sentencing hearing it slated for Sept. 23.
