Madeline Brame clearly doesn't abide by the "new normal" of New York politics. You can almost hear the "social justice" loons cursing under their breath. "What does this crazy lady want again, can't she just let it go and move on with her life?"
In an ideal "woke" restorative justice world, Brame would promptly and permanently shut up and never seek justice for her decorated war veteran son, Sgt. Hason Correa. Brame would even apologize to the monsters who butchered her son, for the hassle of having to nominally answer for their heinous crime.
Sgt. Correa did not know his assailants until his fateful altercation with them outside of a Harlem apartment building on October 19, 2018. Four individuals (three of them siblings) murdered the 35-year-old married father of three young children, kicking, punching him and stabbing him nine times as he tried to run away. Sgt. Correa's father was almost beaten to death when he tried to save his son.
The District Attorney's Office in Manhattan possesses high-definition video of the gruesome attack. A woman named Mary Saunders is reportedly shown on the video punching and kicking Sgt. Correa, later holding him down as he is reportedly being stabbed to death by her brothers. In fact, at one point Sgt. Correa escapes his attackers only to be reportedly tripped down by Saunders as she chased him in the streets.
The nonplussed coterie serving Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg gave a generous plea bargain to Saunders. Time served! Saunders spent only 14 months in jail and was released on just $12,000 bail thanks to bail "reform" laws still being defended and heralded by pro-criminal organizers across the country.
One of the other men involved in the murder, Travis Stewart, was allowed to plead guilty to attempted gang assault and sentenced to just seven years in prison! DA Bragg's office bizarrely claimed that it couldn't prove more serious charges.
Questions arise. How has Bragg chosen to staff his office? Are his prosecutors timid, or otherwise reticent, when it comes to the prospects of actually going to trial, seeking real punishment for accused criminals?
Yet, as heartbroken and devastated as Brame is, she is not going quietly into the night. Madeline's will to fight for justice for her son and other victims of crime is remarkable.
Madeline Brame is not a political person. She has no malice for people who differ with her politically. Indeed, Madeline seems to have reserved all of her wrath for those who want to transform our society into one where violent criminals are considered the injured party, and given as much assistance as possible, while the actual victims are scorned and prevented for seeking justice.
Madeline Brame is now a victims' rights advocate. She is the chairwoman of the Victims Rights Reform Council, and she has also become the scourge of radical woke liberals across New York and the rest of the country, the same people who are desperately trying to peddle the dying myth of successful "bail reform" and "restorative justice".
At an August press conference held across the street from Bragg's office, she is flanked by a diverse group of community activists as she unleashes on DA Bragg. "There should be no pleas for murder especially when it is caught on video. My son was stabbed nine times," says Brame.
Politicians like DA Bragg and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul must accept that Brame isn't shutting up and accepting anything. She isn't going away. Thanks in part to Brame's passionate crusade (she basically started out by herself with a bullhorn outside of Bragg's office) New Yorkers across the political spectrum are paying careful attention to the ludicrous argument that "bail reform" works. Maybe for hardened criminals ... but no one else.
Meanwhile, Gov. Hochul continues to support these laws as well as accusing critics of pushing a "political agenda." As she holds a substantial fundraising lead over her Republican opponent congressman Lee Zeldin, he is surging in the polls with a recent survey finding the governor holding only a slim four-point lead in the race. Maybe the governor should take a cue from Democrat Mayor of New York City Eric Adams who calls current bail reform laws "insane."
Democrats all over the country will lose their seats because of the Faustian bargains they made with radical leftists; this is a phenomenon occurring nationwide and by the time the (few) voices of reason left within their party are heard, it will be too late for many Democrat officeholders.
While political analysts are closely watching governors' races in Wisconsin, Nevada, Georgia and Michigan, they may want to start spending a little more time looking at the New York race as well.
