The left’s new political darling, a 28-year-old former bartender named Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, has been hailed as “the future of our party” by Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez. Ocasio-Cortez shocked the political world in June by defeating 10-term Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley of New York.
After her father died of cancer during the 2008-2009 Great Recession, Ocasio-Cortez began working 18-hour shifts to help her family stay above water. She kicked off her political career in 2016 as a volunteer with Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign.
