Former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke’s fall from the political stratosphere has been so shockingly sudden it’s hard to believe just eight months ago he was one of the darlings of the Democratic Party, raising over $60 million in an ill-fated bid to unseat GOP Sen. Ted Cruz.

Before Wednesday, his political life seemed charmed. The TV cameras liked his looks, former President Barack Obama spoke warmly of him, and he even managed to make the April cover of Vanity Fair, with the cover quotation: “I want to be in it. Man, I’m just born to be in it.”
