Joe Biden’s outlook on life changed forever in 1988 when he was forced to undergo two emergency surgeries to correct near-fatal brain aneurysms and hemorrhaging. Doctors also found a potentially deadly clot in his lung.

“I had a lot of time to think about my past and my future,’’ Biden recounted in his 2007 memoir “Promises to Keep: One Life and Politics,’’ published by Random House. “For good or ill, I was a public man. I was a lucky man, to be sure. This was … my second chance in life.”
