Axis of Autocracies: Iran-China's 25-year Agreement a Reason to Worry, Experts Say

Iran and China forged a new partnership through a freshly inked 25-year strategic agreement that foreign relations experts warn signals the strengthening of an axis of autocracies and poses a growing threat to a U.S.-aligned coalition of democracies.

Under the $400 billion Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Iran, which has suffered due to steep U.S-imposed sanctions, gets some relief in the form of a long-term partner in China for its economic and security needs. Meanwhile, in exchange for its financial commitment, China is set to receive a steady supply of oil, achieve an important aim of its Belt and Road Initiative — a multi-trillion-dollar infrastructure plan that will stretch from East Asia to Europe — and further cement its place as an influential player globally.
