The massive eruption of Kilauea volcano’s East Rift Zone, which led to 1,700 evacuations and forced authorities to hand out over 18,000 gas masks, was a vivid reminder once again of the need to prepare for massive natural catastrophes -- especially when we know they’re coming.

Exhibit No. 1: the 50 million Americans living between San Diego and Seattle, who have been lulled into a potentially deadly sense of fatalism. Earthquake prediction is impossible, they’ve falsely been told, so why worry about it?
