China is using “patriotic tourism” to aggressively advance its interests, sending great masses of tourists into regions where Beijing seeks to expand its influence and control.

Some observers view China’s use of tourism in furtherance of state power as a benign program giving China’s growing middle class an opportunity to explore different countries and cultures. Others see it as a blatant Chinese effort to influence, if not coerce, its Asian neighbors.
