The double whammy of an aging population combined with bottlenecks in the physician-training pipeline are causing a doctor shortage that threatens to plunge great swaths of the U.S. healthcare system into a nightmare of spiraling costs, long waits to see a doctor, less preventative measures and a drop in overall quality of care, experts and analysts warn.
