The double whammy of an aging population combined with bottlenecks in the physician-training pipeline are causing a doctor shortage that threatens to plunge great swaths of the U.S. healthcare system into a nightmare of spiraling costs, long waits to see a doctor, less preventative measures and a drop in overall quality of care, experts and analysts warn.
Even under favorable circumstances, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) now projects the United States will be 42,600 physicians short by 2030.
