President Donald Trump actually entered the White House with plenty of international experience, but in high-powered deal-making rather than diplomacy and statecraft.

How well he has translated that business acumen to success on the global stage all depends on the eye of the beholder. Defenders say that by challenging NATO and the EU, Trump has shook up an ossified, post-WWII order badly in need of an overhaul. But each time he refuses to follow the established Foggy Bottom playbook, critics sound the alarm that he’s weakening America’s alliances abroad.
