Former President Donald Trump, the current front-runner for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, joked that he may pick his next running mate from the pool of candidates at the first Republican debate this week – but how often do former rivals for a party nomination wind up on the same ticket?

It's rare, particularly for Republicans, although there are notable exceptions to the rule.
