A growing shortage of U.S. truckers – already approaching 300,000 by some estimates -- is becoming so severe it could impede the economy and spark inflation, economists warn.

In an economy shifting to more and more online orders that require delivery, the shortage of drivers has attracted the attention of the Federal Reserve. Investors worry that rising transportation costs could lead the Fed to further tighten the money supply, throttling the economy.
