While the world watches Russian President Vladimir Putin pour resources, weapons, and troops into his military invasion of Ukraine, experts say the autocrat's sights remain fixed on a very different region of the world, a remote expanse that he's long coveted: the Arctic.

The geopolitical importance of the strategically positioned tundra – and its vast reserves of natural gas – has been thrust into the spotlight as Russian troops continue their bloody slog in Ukraine.
