A delegate at last summer's Republican National Convention is considering running for the Senate next year.
John Burnett told BuzzFeed News he might launch a campaign to unseat Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., who has served in the chamber since 2009.
"An ordinary candidate is not going to drive the numbers to the polls that are necessary to win," Burnett said. "Especially downstate in New York City, where Republicans are outnumbered 7 to 1. The ideal candidate has to appeal to crossover voters and independents."
Burnett unsuccessfully ran for the job of New York City comptroller in 2013. He is currently a business and political commentator on Fox News and Fox Business Channel, and also works as the managing director of a consulting firm.
He recently appeared on Fox Business Channel and talked about the CEOs who left President Donald Trump's American Manufacturing Council last month.
A message pinned to the top of Burnett's Twitter timeline asks readers whether he should run for Senate in 2018. Seventy-seven percent of the people who voted said he should.
Gillibrand, meanwhile, might run for president in 2020.
