President Donald Trump says the media will eventually cover him more favorably — because they are profiting from interest in his presidency and will want him to get re-elected, The New York Times reported.
In an interview at his West Palm Beach, Florida, golf course, Trump told the newspaper he regularly insults as the "failing New York Times" that the media will "tank" without him.
"Another reason that I'm going to win another four years is because newspapers, television, all forms of media will tank if I'm not there, because without me, their ratings are going down the tubes," Trump told the newspaper. "Without me, The New York Times will indeed be not the failing New York Times, but the failed New York Times."
"So they basically have to let me win," he added. "And eventually, probably six months before the election, they'll be loving me because they're saying, 'Please, please, don't lose Donald Trump.' O.K."
In the same interview, the president also pushed back at suggestions he does not understand complex legislation, boasting he knows more about "the big bills" in Congress "than any president that's ever been in office."
"I know the details of taxes better than anybody," he added. "Better than the greatest CPA. I know the details of healthcare better than most, better than most.”
Trump's comments came a week after he signed the GOP tax overhaul, the first legislative success of his presidency.
