As NBC expects record viewership during the 2016 summer Olympics in Rio De Janiero, which officially kicked off Friday, Bloomberg reports that Hillary Clinton's campaign has shelled out at least $5.5 million on TV ads while GOP nominee Donald Trump has no time reserved as of now or for the rest of the summer or fall.
According to the Hill, Clinton's ads during the games is an attempt to reach out to demographics she has struggled with, including a wide audience of men and young people.
"The ads are a good way to go after Donald Trump's base,'' Neil Oxman, co-founder of The Campaign Group, told Bloomberg.
During the 2012 Olympics in London, which attracted an average of 31 million viewers, President Barack Obama spent $4.5 million on NBC while his opponent, Mitt Romney, spent $2.8 million.
Clinton is expected to exceed the amount of money Obama spent during the 17-day event in 2012 when he was seeking re-election.
According to Bloomberg, despite Trump raising $82 million in conjunction with the Republican National Committee during July and having $37 million on hand as of August, the GOP nominee has no plans of securing time or spending money on television ads.
