Al Sharpton: Cohen 'Expresses Disloyalty' to Trump in Meeting

By    |   Wednesday, 25 July 2018 12:02 PM EDT

The Rev. Al Sharpton said Wednesday that former Trump personal attorney Michael Cohen "openly expresses disloyalty" to President Donald Trump when they met over breakfast last week as he faces federal investigation on several fronts.

"What was unusual was that this is the first time he openly expresses disloyalty to Trump — his sense of betrayal — and saying that he was going to stand up for his family and the country, not for Trump," Sharpton said in a commentary on "The Tom Joyner Morning Show" on syndicated radio.

"He used to say he would take a bullet for Trump."

Sharpton said he and his organization, the National Action Network, often dealt with Cohen when they opposed Trump on various fronts over three decades.

"For the last 30 years, when we would march against Trump or take positions against Trump, or when Trump tried to act liberal and come to National Action Network events, Michael Cohen was always the go-between man who would set things up," he said.

"He was Trump's 'fixer' — so it was not unusual for him to reach out to me."

Sharpton said over their Friday breakfast, which lasted more than an hour, Cohen "made it very clear to me that he was going to do what was right for the country and for his family.

"That says to me that he is willing to sit and talk with authorities about what he knows about Donald Trump in exchange for whatever they’re investigating him for."

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan is probing whether Cohen, 51, violated any campaign finance laws regarding a $130,000 payment to adult-film star Stormy Daniels over an alleged affair with Trump 12 years ago.

Prosecutors also are investigating Cohen for possible bank and wire fraud issues in his business dealings.

No charges have been filed.

On Tuesday, Cohen's lawyer, Lanny Davis, released a recording his client secretly made discussing arrangements for a possible $150,000 payment to former Playboy model Karen McDougal over an alleged affair with Trump nearly a decade ago.

Trump denies both affairs occurred and his campaign has said he knew nothing about any payments.
