Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore has surged four points ahead of Democrat Doug Jones after having trailed earlier this week, according to the latest Gravis Marketing poll Sunday.

"Moore has momentum," Gravis pollster Doug Kaplan said.

The 49 percent support for Moore trumps Jones' 45 percent and represents an eight-point swing from Tuesday's poll, which had Jones leading by 4 percent.

Moore has faced multiple allegations of inappropriate contact with teenage women around 40 years ago when he was in his early 30s. Kaplan said prior polls might have reflected an unwillingness to publicly back the Republican in the deep red state amid the reports.

"We saw the undecideds move from 8 percent to 6 percent, and it is reasonable to assume that shy Moore supporters have become more comfortable expressing their support," Kaplan said.

The race is still too close to call before Tuesday's special election, because of undecideds and the poll's margin of error.

Among the 6 percent of votes still wavering, according to the poll:

  • 49 percent have no preference.
  • 27 percent leaning toward Jones.
  • 24 percent leaning toward Moore.

The poll surveyed 1,254 likely voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percent.

The results are very similar to the latest RealClearPolitics average of polls, where Moore has a 3.8-point lead over Jones. Only The Washington Post, the paper which broke the original report of Moore's accusers, has Jones leading.
