"Sheriff Joe" Arpaio is popping up on robocalls to Alaska's voters in support of Republican Senate hopeful Joe Miller, saying the tea party-backed candidate is the only one campaigning in Alaska who has a plan to secure the nation's borders.
"Joe Miller is the only candidate for Senate with a plan to secure our borders to stop the illegal invasion," Arpaio, sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona, says on the call,
The Huffington Post reported.
"Joe will end taxpayer benefits to illegals and foreign aid to nations encouraging illegal immigration — and finish the border fence."
Miller is one of four Republicans seeking the nomination to challenge incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Begich this in November, and his stance against illegal immigration pairs neatly with Arpaio's.
The sheriff complained recently on
Newsmax TV's "America's Forum" that the Border Patrol is not making enough drug seizures in border states because it has changed its focus to the flood of illegal immigrant children.
Miller has also gone after Begich over immigration policy, in particular unaccompanied minors coming across the border.
"There is no doubt that he is complicit with the president in encouraging and empowering this illegal invasion, both from a policy perspective by voting for amnesty, and by virtue of his refusal to hold Barack Obama accountable for dereliction of duty and usurpation of Congressional authority," Miller said of Begich in July, while also calling for Obama to be impeached, according to
The Huffington Post.
Miller trails behind two of the other three candidates
in the polls, with former Alaska Attorney General Dan Sullivan remaining in the lead heading into Tuesday's primary.
