Former President Bill Clinton will campaign for Kentucky Democratic Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes starting next week.

The Kentucky secretary of state is challenging Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in November. She is the daughter of Jerry Lundergan, former Kentucky Democratic Party chairman and state representative, who is also a longtime friend of Clinton, The Hill reported.

Clinton has said that he plans to play an active role in the Kentucky Senate campaign on behalf of Grimes and was featured in a video that was used at an event launching her campaign in the summer. The former president also encouraged Grimes to enter the race in March 2013 and promised that both he and Hillary would offer their support.

The 42nd president is the last Democrat to carry Kentucky in a presidential race.

Clinton will host a fundraiser for Grimes on Tuesday, Feb. 25 in Louisville, Ky., according to the invitation obtained by the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Tickets to the event are $500 for admission to the lunch, $1,000 for access to the rope line, $2,600 for a special reception with the former president and $5,200 for a "special commemorative gift."

A poll released in early February showed Grimes was leading the Senate minority leader by 4 percentage points.
