A growing number of American Jews support evacuation of all West Back settlements and "caring about Israel" has become a less important part of being Jewish, according to poll cited by a Haaretz report Sunday.
Respondents who consider caring about Israel "a very important part of my being a Jew" fell 8 points from 70% to 62% in the last year, and those who "strongly disagreed" with that statement rose from 9% to 15%, according to the poll.
Perhaps more notably amid stalled White House peace plans for the Mideast, Americans believing Israel "should be willing to dismantle all of the settlements" in coordination with a peace process with the Palestinians rose from 15% to 25% – which contrasts to just 6% of Israeli Jews – according to the report.
Other results from the poll conducted by the American Jewish Committee:
- 80% of Israeli Jews approve of President Trump's U.S.-Israel relations, but only 37% of American Jews do.
- Support for two-state solution had support of nearly two-thirds American Jews, compared to just 39% of Israeli Jews.
- Expectations of weakening ties between American Jews and Israeli Jews rose from 15% to 25%.
The poll was conducted among 1,006 American Jews – 49% percent Democrat and 18% Republican – and 1,000 Israeli Jews, according to Haaretz.
