Fifty-one percent of Americans distrust President Donald Trump's ability to handle the crisis with North Korea, while 44 percent have confidence he can respond appropriately, according to a new NPR/Ipsos poll.
Here is how the poll breaks down:
- Eighty-one percent of Republicans trust in his ability to handle the conflict, while 16 percent do not.
- Nineteen percent of Democrats have confidence in his ability to handle the crisis, while 77 percent do not.
- Forty percent of independents trust his ability to handle North Korea, while 51 percent do not.
- Seventy-four percent of all those polled believe the U.S. has an obligation to protect allies in East Asia, while 13 percent disagree.
One of those surveyed was Lynn Sigfred, a registered Republican who lives outside Milwaukee. She said she worries about how Trump is handling North Korea and prefers the way U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley has dealt with it.
"Just based on how he's reacted to other world situations, it's really hard to say what he'll do," Sigfred said, according to NPR. "He's a bit unpredictable."
The poll, conducted Sept. 11-12, surveyed 1,005 people online.
