Just over half of American voters do not view President-elect Donald Trump favorably, the Quinnipiac University poll reveals.

"American voters give President-elect Trump a negative 37-51 percent favorability rating, compared to a divided 44-46 percent favorability rating Nov. 22, according to the poll.

Meanwhile voters approve 55-39 percent of the job President Barack Obama is doing — his best approval rating in seven years.

"President Barack Obama leaves the White House a lot more popular than Donald Trump is as he crosses the threshold and saddles up for the most important job in the world," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University poll.

Here is how the rest of the poll breaks down:

  • Optimistic about the next four years with Trump as president: 52 percent.
  • Trump will be a "not so good" or bad president: 52 percent.
  • He will be either great or good: 42 percent.
  • Trump should close his personal Twitter account: 64 percent.
  • He is not honest: 53 percent.
  • He was not honest in November: 52 percent.
  • Trump has good leadership skills: 49 percent.
  • Trump had good leadership skills after the election: 56 percent.
  • He does not care about average American: 52 percent.
  • He did not care about the Americans in November: 51 percent.
  • Those who say Trump is a strong person: 71 percent.
  • Trump was a strong person after the election: 74 percent.
  • He is intelligent: 68 percent.
  • Trump was intelligent in November: 74 percent.
  • Trump is not level-headed: 62 percent.
  • Trump was not level-headed after the election: 57 percent.

"President-elect Trump gets points for strength and intelligence, but voters' feelings about his personality traits, empathy, leadership, and level-headedness, are headed south," Malloy said.
