Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn,, on Sunday lauded Sen. John McCain for mentoring new members of the upper chamber — and “making sure he had women out front.”

In an emotional interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Klobuchar recalled her last visit with McCain at his home in Arizona before he died.

“He was pretty fragile but his irascible self,” she joked.

“I had brought a few of his books with me… he pointed to a sentence… ‘nothing in life is more liberating that fighting for a cause bigger then yourself.’

“That was John McCain,” she said, noting his “resiliency after the [2008] presidential race where he could have just gone home and given up.”

“Instead, he went back to the Senate, mentoring young senators like myself, taught us how to stand up in the world, always making sure he had women out front,” she said.

“Maybe it’s all those strong women in his life, from his mother [Roberta McCain] to [wife] Cindy to his daughter, Meghan — that was a big part of him and those are lessons that’ve been passed on to so many and in that way his legacy will live on.”

“He had a joy about politics and a love for his country that was unmatched,” Klobuchar added. “He went everyplace that no one would go to stand up for America. In that way he was a leader like no other.”
