President Donald Trump is firing back at New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s criticism of his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
Cuomo, in a Democratic National Convention speech on Monday, had ripped Trump's efforts.
"We saw the failure of a government that tried to deny the virus, then tried to ignore it and then tried to politicize it," Cuomo said.
Trump took to Twitter late Monday night to push back. The president accused the governor of being responsible for thousands of more coronavirus deaths in New York nursing homes.
Trump wrote: "Now AP (Associated Press) estimates that the real Cuomo number of people killed because of his total incompetence is 11,000, not the 6000 that was originally thought!"
Fox News said the tweet referred to Cuomo’s policy in March that essentially ordered nursing homes to accept coronavirus patients from hospitals.
The president also retweeted a clip of Cuomo praising White House efforts in handling the coronavirus.
He wrote: “Cuomo, just like his brother Fredo, has not got a very good memory!”
The “Fredo” mention referred to Cuomo’s brother, CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, who was caught on video last year swearing and threatening a man who called him by that name. Fredo is an apparent reference to Fredo Corleone, the cowardly brother from “The Godfather.”
