Trey Gowdy: FBI's McCabe 'Undercut His Credibility'

("Fox News Sunday")

By    |   Sunday, 18 March 2018 10:37 AM EDT

Fired FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe "undercut his credibility," Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., said Sunday, calling his ouster one that bureau colleagues themselves recommended.

The long-serving bureau veteran has nobody to blame but himself, Gowdy told "Fox News Sunday."

"Andy McCabe has undercut his credibility all by himself," the House Oversight Committee chairman said.

"If he's got credibility issues, he need to look no further than himself," he added.

But Gowdy said he will await judgment until the Justice Department's inspector general report is released.

"Make no mistake — the FBI is who recommended that he be fired," Gowdy said. "It wasn't crazy House Republicans, and it wasn't the Trump administration. It was his own fellow bureau agents."

Gowdy also scolded John Dowd, the lawyer for President Donald Trump, who has said the Mueller probe should end.

"The president's attorney does him a disservice when he says that and when he frames the investigation that way," he said, adding the Mueller probe has elements that have "nothing to do with collusion."

"If you have an innocent client, Mr. Dowd, act like it!" Gowdy said.
