Reps. D'Esposito, Lawler to Newsmax: Mazi Pilip Will Win Santos' Seat

By    |   Tuesday, 13 February 2024 10:19 AM EST

Reps. Anthony D'Esposito, R-N.Y., and Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., are confident Republican nominee Mazi Pilip will defeat former Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., in Tuesday's election in New York's 3rd Congressional District.

"We've watched the voting over the last 10 days," D'Esposito, who represents New York's 4th Congressional District, told Newsmax's "Wake Up America." "I am confident that Mazi is in great shape."

Nassau County Republicans have been working "night and day" to get the vote out, he added, expressing confidence Pilip will pull out the victory.

"You talk to the people on the ground that know the districts, places like Great Neck, this is the place where Mazi Pilip represents in the county legislature," he said. "It was in Democrats' hands from almost the time that we've had the Nassau County Legislature, since its inception, and Mazi was able to flip that."

Such communities are "historic Democrat strongholds," but many are voting Republican, which has "a lot to do with the Orthodox Jewish population [and] the Mashhadi Jews," D'Esposito said. "They are registered Democrats who have moved in from the five boroughs and are still registered Democrat but are voting Republican."

The race will determine who represents Nassau County and a portion of Queens County and is widely seen as holding national significance, considering the larger 2024 races.

Further, if Suozzi, who represented the district for six years before leaving for an unsuccessful race for governor, wins, that will narrow the GOP's already slim House majority.

Voters in New York City, meanwhile, will need to brave the elements Tuesday, with eight inches of snow being forecast, but Lawler, who represents New York's Hudson Valley, noted there has already been a good turnout with early voters.

"Despite the snow, I think we'll be OK," he said.

Meanwhile, Pilip does not have Suozzi's name recognition, but Lawler said voters "don't like" the former congressman.

"He's lost five times during his career for numerous public offices," Lawler said. "He's a career politician. Democrats have had to spend nearly $25 million on this race to try and prop [him] up and every public poll has it within the margin of error."
