Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., says progressives are “frustrated” with the resistance of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to begin the impeachment process against President Donald Trump.
In an interview aired Sunday on ABC News’ “This Week,” the freshman lawmaker said pressure for proceedings grows “every day.”
"I think [the frustration with Pelosi] is quite real,” she said about fellow progressives. “I believe that there is a very real animus and desire to make sure that we are holding this president to account.”
Pelosi last Thursday reiterated her stance that a case of impeachment has to be “methodical.”
"What we want to do is have a methodical approach to the path that we are on… but not any one issue is going to trigger, 'Oh, now we’ll go do [impeachment].' Because it’s about investigating, it’s about litigating, it’s about getting the truth to hold everyone accountable and no one is above the law," she said, ABC News reported.
But according to Ocasio-Cortez, Trump’s remarks on his willingness to listen to foreign “dirt” are over the line.
“Every day that passes, the pressure to impeach grows, and I think that it's justifiable,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “I think that with the president now saying that he is willing to break the law to win reelection, that transcends partisanship. It transcends party lines, and this is now about the rule of law in the United States of America."
“Ten counts of obstruction of justice, four with rock solid evidence. We have violations of the emoluments clause,” she added, citing the report from special counsel Robert Mueller.
“We need to at least open an inquiry so that we can look at what is going on, and that is what opening an impeachment inquiry means. Holding this president (to) account is holding all of government to account."
