Arizona Republican Gov. Doug Ducey said Tuesday that the National Guard troops being sent to the U.S.-Mexico border are "all about public safety."
"This is all about public safety," Ducey told Fox News. "We’re talking about securing our border and stopping the flow of illegal drugs and human trafficking that’s happening at the border. That is what a governor does, their first responsibility is to protect the public and make sure there is border security. I'm thankful we have an administration that sees it the same way.”
The governor said that 225 service members were called up Monday, and that more than 100 more will be added Tuesday.
"Arizona welcomes the deployment of National Guard to the border," Ducey said in a statement released last week. "Washington has ignored this issue for too long and help is needed.
"For Arizona, it’s all about public safety. … Anything we can do to further bolster these efforts is good news for Arizona and for our national security. I look forward to working closely with federal officials on this important issue."
