Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, on Monday said he would defeat any GOP legal challenges to the presidential election, reports The Washington Post.
Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden leads President Donald Trump in the critical state of Pennsylvania by 5-7 points, according to the final Monmouth University Poll.
Both candidates are betting big on Pennsylvania just ahead of the election and Trump and his reelection campaign are signaling they will pursue an aggressive legal strategy to try to prevent the state from counting mailed ballots that are received in the three days after the election.
The three-day extension was ordered by Pennsylvania's top court last week. The Supreme Court refused to block it, but several conservative justices have indicated they could revisit the issue after the election.
Shapiro told the Post a “careful decision was made to try to stave off the anticipated legal challenges by Donald Trump and his enablers” in Pennsylvania, but wouldn’t divulge how it might unfold.
“We have a sitting president who’s actively trying to undermine this election,” Shapiro told the Post. “He’s doing that because he knows that if all legal eligible votes are counted, he’s more likely than not going to come out on the losing side here in Pennsylvania.”
Trump said the high court's pre-election refusal to rule out the extension was a "terrible decision." He also said that once the polls close Tuesday, "we're going in with our lawyers."
