Former state Rep. Bakari Sellers, D-South Carolina and an African American, was not impressed with Donald Trump's apology speech in North Carolina on Thursday night, telling CNN's Anderson Cooper this is the same Republican nominee who is eventually going give back any support the speech might have garnered.

"Donald Trump's been in the race for 429 days and the bar is so low that we are now praising him for making an unspecified apology for an unspecified quote to an unspecified group of people," Sellers said on "Anderson Cooper 360." "That was sarcasm to quote Donald Trump.

"What we heard today was better than most speeches than he's given, but does this put any fear? No, because tomorrow Donald Trump will go out and step on his own message."

Trump's speech in North Carolina reflected a sort of apology of his lack of political correctness.

"Sometimes, in the heat of debate, and speaking on a multitude of issues, you don't choose the right words or you say the wrong thing. I have done that, and I regret it, particularly where it may have caused personal pain. Too much is at stake for us to be consumed with these issues. But one thing I can promise you is this: I will always tell you the truth."

Fellow Democratic panelist Christine Quinn, who is openly gay, was equally skeptical of Trump's sincerity.

"I think this is the pivot of a desperate candidate who is trying to make himself different and put on a different face and that is not going to fly," she said.

Nick Merrill, traveling press secretary for Hillary Clinton, tweeted moments after Trump's apology:
