Former chief White House strategist Steve Bannon said the coronavirus crisis and its effect on the economy ahead of the election has become President Donald Trump’s “Churchill moment.”
In an interview on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” the ardent Trump ally said “bold action” will be key.
“The Democrats will do anything to destroy Donald Trump and that's why I think they will come around to any candidate they think can do it,” he said of the current state of the Democratic presidential primary race.
“This is still wide open.”
“This is Trump’s Churchill moment,” he declared, referring to Winston Churchill’s leadership as British prime minister in 1940. “He's got to bring the country together, which he is doing. He’s got to confront not just the virus but the economic contagion coming out of China.”
“He does that, we don't need to worry about 2020,” Bannon said.
He also applauded Trump for banning travel to and from China and for pushing China’s President Xi Jinping to be more transparent.
“One of the most powerful things President Trump has done in addition to the bold action early on [is to say] nothing is inevitable,” he said. “He's reached back … to say the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. …He shut down travel in late January and … stopped potentially the inflow of other people infected.
“That's why we are in the shape today, get our hands around this and get the local authorities up to speed with this task force he's got that [Vice President] Mike Pence's steady hand [is] on top of. This is all about bold action.”
