White House chief of staff Reince Priebus and top adviser Steve Bannon resisted the appointment of Anthony Scaramucci as White House communication director, multiple news reports said.

The hiring of Scaramucci is said to have sparked the resignation of White House press secretary Sean Spicer.

Spicer vehemently disagreed with Scaramucci's appointment, according to The New York Times.

President Donald Trump had requested Spicer stay as press secretary, but Spicer said he believed the Scaramucci appointment was a major mistake, The Times quoted a person "with direct knowledge of the exchange."

Meanwhile, Priebus and Bannon tried to push Trump away from the Scarmucci appointment, according to CNBC.

At one point, Priebus made his objections known to Vice President Mike Pence, but did not gain his support, NBC News reported.

And Axios reported both Bannon and Priebus had fought hard to stop the appointment, but Trump could not be swayed.

However following Spicer's resignation, Priebus insisted he supports Scaramucci "100 percent." And one official insisted Priebus and Scaramucci have a "long-standing, strong relationship," NBC News reported.

Prior to supporting Trump in 2016, Scaramucci was a Scott Walker and later a Jeb Bush supporter, NBC News reported.
