The reports of Stephen Bannon's demise were greatly exaggerated, so says Stephen Bannon, Axios reported.
President Donald Trump's chief strategist denounced the multiple reports that he was close to quitting, calling them "100 percent nonsense," Axios reported.
"I love a gunfight," Bannon told associates, Axios reported.
What isn't nonsense, according to reports, is the ever-growing chasm within the White House between the Bannon faction and the rising star Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law.
Bannon sees Kushner as a roadblock to his populist platform, which propelled Trump into the White House; Kushner sees Bannon as an ideologue.
According to Axios, "the hatred between the two wings is intense and irreconcilable."
The report comes a day after Trump removed Bannon from the National Security Council, a move that was either a demotion or a natural evolution, depending on the reports or the spin.
