While Joe Biden is leading many of the polls since the start of the global coronavirus pandemic, even 10 points nationally, there is still a path for President Donald Trump, according to the latest CBS News Battleground Tracker.
Assuming President Donald Trump can carry the South (including toss-up battleground states North Carolina, Florida, and Georgia), the race might come down to the likes of rust-belt states Ohio (18 electoral votes) and Michigan (16).
The latest CBS News Battleground Tracker poll has Trump up one in Ohio and Biden leading Michigan by 6 points.
Notably, the Biden vote has high percentages of those motivated to vote against Trump:
Biden voters in Ohio:
- Mainly because I like Biden 25%.
- Mainly to support the Democrat candidate 19%.
- Mainly to oppose Trump 56%.
Biden voters in Michigan:
- Mainly because I like Biden 30%.
- Mainly to support the Democrat candidate 19%.
- Mainly to oppose Trump 51%.
Trump leads Biden in enthusiasm by a wide margin, according to the poll.
Trump voters in Ohio:
- Mainly because I like Trump 63%.
- Mainly to support the Republican candidate 13%.
- Mainly to oppose Biden 24%.
Trump voters in Michigan:
- Mainly because I like Biden 61%.
- Mainly to support the Democrat candidate 18%.
- Mainly to oppose Trump 21%.
The CBS News polled were conducted by YouGov between July 21-24 among 1,177 registered voters in Michigan with a 3.4 percentage point margin of error and 1,227 in Ohio with a 3.6 point margin of error. The national survey was conducted among a nationally representative sample of 2,008 U.S. adult residents. The margin of error for U.S. adults is 2.5 pts.
