Carson: RNC Will Destroy Party If It Rejects Trump

(MSNBC)

If the Republican National Committee tries to "undermine the will" of the American people and name a candidate other than front-runner Donald Trump this summer, it will "destroy the party," former candidate and Trump endorser Ben Carson said Friday.

"Hopefully between now and then, they will come to understand that if try to undermine the will of the people, they will have not only destroyed their party, but they will fundamentally change the United States of America," the retired neurosurgeon told MSNBC's Chuck Todd

RNC officials may think they're fair, but Carson said he doesn't agree.

"I think they try to pick and choose who the candidate should be, and they focus attention and help to certain people," he said. "Other people they try to ignore. The important thing the RNC and everybody to the DNC [Democratic National Committee], everybody needs to recognize this country was built around the will of the people."

Meanwhile, Carson said, it's time for more "mature" talk on policy rather than personal issues, and he believes Trump is working hard to change the tone of the election.

The media adds to the problem, Carson told Todd, because "you guys just want to talk about, this person said this about you and this person said this about your mama ... when are we going to mature to the point where we actually focus on issues?"

Carson also praised Trump for clarifying his statements about punishing women who have had abortions, if the procedures should become illegal in the future.

"That should be comforting to some people who say that Donald Trump is a wild man, and he will never listen to anybody," said Carson. He made a mistake and he corrected it. I think that's better than somebody who makes the mistake and then doubles down and triples down on it."
