Retired pediatric neurosurgeon Ben Carson has plans to go to Iowa after making an announcement about his possible intentions to seek the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, according to the Daily Caller.

Aides for Carson's exploratory campaign declined to elaborate on the nature of his announcement at Detroit's Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts on May 4, according to The Des Moines Register.

Carson will visit cities across Iowa from May 4-6 to "discuss healthcare, education, and the economy" his political organization said, according to the Caller. One event will include a visit to the Iowa Clinic in West Des Moines and an event at the St. Ambrose University in Davenport on May 6, Iowa Republican activists told the Register.

The 63-year-old has never run for higher office but has found popularity among Christian conservatives, pro-life voters, school choice proponents, and tea party conservatives.

In a CNN/ORC International poll released Monday, Carson was at the bottom of a list of eight candidates surveyed, tying with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie with 4 percent support.

Nineteen possible Republican candidates were in New Hampshire over the weekend to attend the Republican Leadership Summit. Carson was the only potential candidate not to attend, citing a scheduling conflict.
