Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., slammed the newly released GOP tax bill on Friday, tweeting it was a "moral obscenity" as he urged fellow lawmakers not to pass it, The Hill reported Friday.
Sanders tweeted:
Republicans in Congress revealed the details of their tax reform legislation on Friday, announcing that it included proposed tax cuts for businesses, as well as the wealthy and some middle-income earners.
Republican leaders in the House and Senate expect to have the votes to pass the bill, which represents the biggest tax overhaul since 1986. Congressional lawmakers expect to vote on it next week and hope to present it to President Donald Trump for his signature by Christmas.
Although Democratic lawmakers have criticized the legislation, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the changes would benefit the economy.
"By lowering tax rates, simplifying the rigged and burdensome tax code, and repealing the failed tax on lower- and middle-income households known as the Obamacare individual mandate, this legislation will grow our economy, raise wages and promote economic competitiveness," Sanders said on Friday.
