The Democratic Party convention will be contested unless front-runner Hillary Clinton gets enough pledged delegates to win the nomination without super delegates, Bernie Sander said at a press conference in Washington, DC.

ABC News reports that the Vermont senator vowed to fight to win over the super delegates until they formally vote in July. Sanders' campaign staff has been stressing this point recently, but this was the most direct statement the senator has made about the subject.

Clinton so far has the backing of 520 super delegates, which – together with her pledged delegates – brings her very close to the number needed for the nomination. Sanders has only 39 superdelegates, and argues that is unfair.

"If I win a state with 70 percent of the votes you know what, I think I'm entitled to those superdelegates," he said. "I think that the superdelegates should reflect what the people in the state want."

Sanders called on superdelegates from such to change their allegiances.
